Sustainable food on campus to be talk topic

The concept of a sustainable-food program for college dining halls will be the topic of a talk to be delivered on campus by John Turenne of Sustainable Food Systems. Titled ?The Sustainable Food Movement: Implications and Opportunities for College Dining,? the talk will start at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 20, in Davis Auditorium, Palamountain Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Turenne, the chef who oversaw the creation of the sustainable-food program at Yale University, will speak about the economic, social, and nutritional benefits as well as the environmental pluses of local, renewable food sources.

Since creating his own consulting business, Turenne has assisted many colleges and
universities to apply his practices to their dining-hall programs. Brown University, the University of Connecticut, Williams College, and Green Mountain College have been among his clients.

Turenne?s appearance at Skidmore comes as part of the campus?s Focus the Nation/Focus Skidmore activities designed to promote environmentally sound policies for college campuses as well as for the nation as a whole. His lecture is sponsored by the student organization, Skidmore Nutrition Action Coalition (SNAC). Turenne will also meet with the college?s Dining Services to discuss the possible implementation of sustainable-food initiatives at Skidmore.
