Concert to feature North Indian classical music

Skidmore will continue its Sterne Virtuoso Series of concerts with a performance by Rajeev Taranath on the sarod (Indian lute) accompanied by Abhiman Kaushal on tabla, in a performance scheduled at 8 p.m. Friday, March 21, in Filene Recital Hall. Tickets are $5, general admission, and $2 for students and senior citizens.

One of the most distinguished players of the sarod in both the Eastern and Western worlds, Rajeev Taranath is known for adding his own unique melodies and rhythms to Hindustani classical music. He performs regularly, splitting his time among India, the U.S., and Europe.

An award-winning musical director and composer of scores for Indian films, he has been a visiting professor of Indian music at the California Institute of Performing Arts.

For his Skidmore concert, Taranath will be accompanied by Abhiman Kaushal, who represents the Farukkabad and Lucknow styles of tabla. Known for his sensitive accompaniment and intense solo playing, he has accompanied leading dancers, singers, and musicians of North Indian classical music.

Skidmore?s Sterne Virtuoso Series was established through a generous bequest from Jean Sterne, a member of the college?s Class of 1932. The series has brought to the college such exceptional artists as pianists Garrick Ohlsson and Stephen Hough, the Kronos Quartet, and jazz great Dave Brubeck.
