Sterne Artist Michelle Kim returns for talk, concert

Noted violinist and assistant concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic since 2001, Sterne Virtuoso Artist Michelle Mi-Kyung Kim will make her second guest appearance as soloist with the Skidmore College Orchestra this week and give a public presentation on the orchestra?s recent visit to North Korea.

At 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, in Davis Auditorium of Palamountain Hall, Ms. Kim, a Korean-born American, will speak about the New York Philharmonic?s historic concert tour of North Korea this past February. She will also show personal photographs taken during the tour. Admission is free and open to the public.

At 8:15 p.m. Thursday, April 24, in Filene Recital Hall, Ms. Kim will perform with the Skidmore College Orchestra in a program that includes Mendelssohn?s Violin Concerto, Mozart?s overture "La Clemenza Di Tito," and Ravel?s "Le Tombeau de Couperin." Anthony Holland is the orchestra?s musical director.

Seating is very limited for this one-time performance. Please call 580-5320 for ticket reservations. Admission is $5 for the general public and $2 for students and senior citizens. Admission is free for Skidmore students.

A prolific and unassuming performer, Kim was first violinist for the Rossetti String Quartet, and performed in the Santa Barbara Chamber Music Series with Christopher O?Riley, Gary Hoffman, and Cho-Liang Lin. She has appeared as a soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pacific Symphony, and New Jersey Symphony, and with Skidmore?s Orchestra, where a standing-room-only audience was dazzled by her technical brilliance, and her effective, forthright teaching and coaching style amazed students.

Kim is the final Sterne Virtuoso artist this year at Skidmore. The Sterne program was established through a generous bequest from Jean Sterne, a member of the college?s Class of 1932.
