Book Nominations solicited for year five

Saratoga Reads has begun its fifth year with a call for nominations for the program's new book of choice.

This year, the criteria have been expanded so that the public can nominate works of any type of prose, including nonfiction and translations. In the past, only novels were eligible.

The book must not exceed 400 pages and must be readily available in paperback. Nominated titles should be able to stimulate broad community participation and discussion and to inspire creative programming.

"We've just concluded year four of Saratoga Reads with a fabulous event featuring Sara Gruen, author of the bestseller Water for Elephants, our most recent book of choice," said Tabitha Orthwein, board coordinator of Saratoga Reads. "The momentum from this event has carried us right into the search for a year-five book, and we encourage the public to submit nominations."

Nominations can be made online at the Saratoga Reads Web site or by paper ballot at the following locations: Saratoga Springs Public Library, Barnes & Noble in Wilton, Borders in Saratoga Springs, Uncommon Grounds in Saratoga Springs, and the Skidmore Shop on the Skidmore campus.

The deadline for nominations is August 21.

The Saratoga Reads Selection Advisory Group will review the nominations and assemble a ballot of finalists for a public vote, to begin October 1. The winning title will be announced on November 6.

Saratoga Reads is a volunteer organization dedicated to creating an extensive and shared conversation for a range of age groups. The program centers on the community-wide reading of a single book, one compelling enough to inspire lively conversation and diverse educational and cultural activities.
