Whatever the screen, Skidmore applauds Obama

On screens around campus and on desktops, the Skidmore community watched the inauguration of America's 44th president.

In the Spa, there was light applause when Wolf Blitzer broke in during Itzhak Perlman's performance to announce that, with the arrival of noon, Barack Obama had officially entered office. A few minutes later, that turned to enthusiastic cheering as Obama completed the oath of office.

During Obama's address, many lines drew applause, but perhaps none more so than his call to reject the ?false choice? between safety and American ideals.

On computer screens, many Skidmore alumni and at least a few staff members made history of sorts by participating in the first live discussion of an inauguration via a social network, taking advantage of CNN's partnership with Facebook.

Alumna Tara Greco, for example, said she is "happy because Obama has 'chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord."

Erin Martinovich, director of the annual fund, declared "she is amazed she is watching the inauguration on Facebook."

More than a million Facebook members participated in the discussion and as many as 8500 per minute posted comments, the company reported.

Many alumni watched the inauguration from the National Mall, aided by 20 Jumbotrons. Among them were seven members of the Class of 2007. From left to right: Emily Wheeler, Alli Feigen, Mike Haftel, Taylor Leake, Danika Vittoria, Evan Iannitti, and Leslie Rosenberg.
