Women?s basketball uses three-pointers to upset St. Lawrence

The Skidmore women?s basketball team made a combined 13 shots from behind-the-arc to propel the Thoroughbreds to a 69-58 win over St. Lawrence Saturday afternoon in a weekend sweep of Liberty League opponents.

The Skidmore women are now an even 5-5 in Liberty League play and 8-13 in overall as they move up to fifth place in conference standings. Senior guard Laurel Brown (South Hamilton, Mass.) posted a season-high 21 points with four three?s to lead the Thoroughbreds over the Saints.

Junior Dana Leonard (Cooperstown, N.Y.) also had a season-high performance with 26 points and 13 rebounds as Skidmore pulled away from Clarkson Friday evening to take a 67-56 conference victory. The women suffered a 64-50 loss to first-place Union last Tuesday. Senior Kellye Caufield (Monroe, Conn.) had 15 points and seven rebounds to pace Skidmore against the Dutchwomen.

Men?s hockey action featured two overtime games, with Skidmore skating to a 2-2 tie with Salem State Saturday and a 3-2 loss to Southern Maine Friday. Sophomore Hunter Thayer (Shelburne, Vt.) scored at 9:12 in the second period to keep the game tied, 2-2, and force the eventual overtime period. Thayer is now tied for the team lead in goals scored with eight.

The women?s swimming and diving team hosted the annual Women?s Sprint Invite Saturday, competing against Vassar, William Smith, Cazenovia, and SUNY Cobleskill. The women finished third with 157.0 points behind invite winner Vassar (215.5) and second-place William Smith (168.5).

Senior Kristen Zebrowski (Niskayuna, N.Y.) earned two first-place finishes for Skidmore, posting wins in the 500 freestyle (5:23.79) and the 200 freestyle (2:01.21). Junior Sonia Segal Smith (Needham, Mass.) also gained first-place points for the Thoroughbreds, as she touched first in the 50 breaststroke in a time of 33.39.

Men?s basketball fell to 7-14 and 2-8 in conference play with a 67-58 loss to Clarkson and an 83-68 loss to St. Lawrence.

Freshman led the way for Skidmore over the weekend as Terron Victoria (Albany, N.Y.) finished with 16 points against Clarkson, while Gerard O?Shea (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) tallied 11 points against St. Lawrence.

The men also fell to Union in an 85-82 heartbreaker last Tuesday. Jeff Altimar (Medfield, Mass.) finished with 23 points including a three-pointer that tied the game with 14.4 seconds left. ~ By Sytiva Seitz
