Golf, lacrosse, tennis, and baseball report weekend action

Skidmore?s golf team, ranked third in Division III, finished fourth at the George Washington Invitational played over the weekend of March 21-22 in Bethany Beach, Del.

The field included 22 teams, all Division I with the exception of the Thoroughbreds. Sophomore Joe Flowers (Benton, Maine) led the Skidmore charge, finishing tied for eighth with a 72-77?149. The University of Rhode Island (309-292?601) was first, followed by Longwood University (305-300?605), and the University of Pennsylvania (303-303?600).

Senior Nick Coppola (Basking Ridge, N.J.) broke Skidmore?s all-time assist record Saturday as the men?s lacrosse team stomped Lasell College, 16-2. Coppola now has 100 career assists, ousting the old record of 95 held by Chris Bivona ?03.

The women?s lacrosse team improved its record to 2-1 after a convincing 16-7 win over Hartwick College Thursday. Freshman Lindsay Stavola (Montauk, N.Y.) led all scorers with five goals and two assists.

The undefeated men?s tennis squad remained perfect Sunday with a 9-0 shutout over Wheaton College. The 20th-ranked Thoroughbreds won all but one singles match in straight sets to improve to 11-0.

The 25th-ranked women?s tennis team continued to roll, winning its third straight match over Rochester, 8-1. Sophomore Rachel Loeb (Greenwood Village, Colo.) won 6-0, 6-3 at number-two singles and 8-6 at number-one doubles along with classmate Danika Robison South Burlington, Vt.

Junior outfielder Mike Jaffe (Wynnewood, Pa.) went 3-5 on the day with two RBI and one run scored as the baseball team dropped a Saturday doubleheader, 7-3, 3-2, to the Stevens Institute of Technology. The Thoroughbreds fell to FDU-Florham, 8-7, on Sunday. ~ By Sytiva Seitz
