Men?s tennis team captures Liberty League title

For the second straight year, the 20th-ranked Skidmore men?s tennis team claimed the Liberty League championship trophy in an exciting 5-4 win Sunday over Vassar College.

Sophomore Spencer Cheng (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) clinched the win for the Thoroughbreds in the four-flight singles match. Cheng took Vassar?s Josh Jasso to the wire after losing the first set, 3-6, and forced a three-set tie-breaker in which Cheng was victorious, posting the 6-4, 7-6(8-6) victory.

Skidmore has won the league championship in four of the last five years and finish this season with a sparkling 15-2 record. Sophomore Carl-Eric Girardin (Lake Bluff, Ill.) was named tournament MVP after winning both matches at number-one singles during the tournament.

Baseball posted a solid 5-1 week with two doubleheader sweeps over Vassar to improve to 18-13 on the year and 9-7 in conference play. The Thoroughbreds also defeated Southern Vermont, 16-10, and dropped a 15-14 decision to Middlebury. Senior Justin Morelli (Setauket, N.Y.) leads the Thoroughbreds with a .452 batting average and has a 20-game hit streak after the week.

The third-ranked golf team captured the Palamountain Invitational trophy April 12-13 and was second behind top-ranked Huntingdon College at the Kravitz Invite in Rochester. Junior Chris DeJohn (Rocky Hill, Conn.) earned top individual honors at the Palamountain Invitational and shot a second-round 70 for the Thoroughbreds at the Kravitz Invite.

Senior Nick Coppola (Basking Ridge, N.J.) had three goals and four assists to push the men?s lacrosse team to a 17-8 Liberty League win over Vassar Saturday. The men (7-5) close out regular-season play this week with a conference game at Hamilton on Wednesday, April 22, and a home contest Saturday, April 25, against Clarkson.

Women?s tennis, ranked 26th nationally, posted wins over MIT and Brandeis University to take a 14-4 record into the Liberty League Championships April 25 at Vassar.

Softball was 4-2 with doubleheader sweeps of Johnson State and Cazenovia College. The Thoroughbreds will take a 16-9 record into their next doubleheader with MCLA on Thursday, April 23.

The women?s lacrosse squad fell to Liberty League opponents St. Lawrence (13-10) and Clarkson (6-12), while also dropping a 16-5 contest to Williams to put its record at 6-7.
