Saratoga Reads announces wrap-up events for April 26
April 22, 2009
Saratoga Reads, a Skidmore College-Saratoga collaboration, will conclude its activities
for the year with two events on the afternoon of Sunday, April 26. Bees will be everywhere?at
least thematically?as both events celebrate the current Saratoga Reads book of choice,
The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd.
An afternoon of family fun will take place on the Skidmore campus, 1 to 4 p.m., as Saratoga Reads teams up with Skidmore and its student volunteer organization, Benef-Action, to sponsor the College?s annual Community Day and Kids? Fair. Open to the public free of charge, the event will take place on upper South Park (rain location, Case Center).
The Kids? Fair will feature arts and crafts, games, musical entertainment, and master balloon artist Wizzie. A special feature will be programs on bees, beekeeping, and honey production, presented by the Scotia-Glenville Traveling Museum and by beekeeper Leo Siemion, Jr.
"The Benef-Action Kids' Fair has been a highly successful bridge to the community over the years, as families have come to the campus for an afternoon of fun and entertainment," said Robert Kimmerle, Skidmore's director of community relations. "We're building on that tradition as Saratoga Reads again joins forces with Benef-Action for an even bigger event."
The April 26 activities will also include a program titled ?The (Not So) Secret Life of Bees,? which will explore the importance of honeybees and their role in local agriculture. Sponsored by the friends of the Saratoga Public Library, the he event will take place 2 to 4 p.m. in the library?s Harry Dutcher Community Room. Led by a panel of experts on beekeeping, the session will seek to debunk some of the myths about bees and reveal the pivotal role of the honeybee in agriculture. Admission is free and no reservations are required.

?As we buzz into spring with this capstone weekend of programming, we bid farewell to The Secret Life of Bees and begin our quest for next year?s book of choice,? said Tabitha Orthwein, board coordinator for Saratoga Reads. ?Community members are invited to submit book nominations at our website, beginning June 13. We hope to hear from you.?
