Hawthorne String Quartet to perform with Skidmore Orchestra

The Hawthorne String Quartet will perform on campus one last time during this spring?s residency as Sterne Virtuoso Artists.

The quartet will join the Skidmore College Orchestra in performance at 8:15 p.m. Saturday, April 25, in Filene Recital Hall. The program, under the direction of Anthony Holland, includes Beethoven?s ?Namensfeier Overture,? Suk?s ?Meditation on Czech Chorale,? Elgar?s Introduction and Allegro for string quartet and string orchestra, and ?Variations on a Theme of Haydn? by Brahms.

Tickets are $5 for general admission, $2 for students and senior citizens, and free for Skidmore students. Tickets are available at the door starting at 7 p.m.

The Boston- and Berkshires-based quartet spent a week on campus earlier this semester, participating in the fifth annual Skidmore String Music Festival. Last week, the HSQ performed in a Holocaust Remembrance Day event (Yom HaShoah) at the Tang Museum. HSQ was formed in 1986, and has distinguished itself internationally by championing the works of composers persecuted during the Nazi regime, with an emphasis on Czech composers incarcerated in the Theresienstadt concentration camp (Terezin).

The quartet takes its name from the New England novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne, author of the classic The Scarlet Letter. Quartet members are Ronan Lefkowitz and Si-Jing Huang, violins; Mark Ludwig, viola; and Sato Knudsen, cello.
