Men?s lacrosse beats Clarkson; earns Liberty playoff nod

Led by 16 saves from junior goalie Flip Bongaerts (Summerland, Calif.), the Skidmore College men?s lacrosse team defeated Clarkson University 16-10 to earn the right to host a Liberty League semifinal game against Clarkson on Friday, May 1.

Sophomore Ben Cornell (Natick, Mass.) scored a season-high five goals to lead the Thoroughbred offense.

The riding team competed at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Championship in Nashville, Tenn., and finished tied for fourth place with the College of Charleston (SC). Senior Jennifer Wilkins earned seven points for her first-place finished in the Open Equitation on the Flat, and senior Chelsea Jones, third in the Novice Equitation Over Fences, picked up four points. Sophomore Alexandra McGuire earned three points for the Thoroughbreds for her fourth-place finish in the Walk-Trot-Canter.

Individually, junior Grier Filley won the Novice on the Flat, while sophomore Hanae Kimura was second in the Walk-Trot-Canter and junior Emily Hottensen took third in the Walk-Trot.

Women?s tennis advanced to the final match of the Liberty League championships with a 5-4 win over St. Lawrence Saturday, but fell in the championship match to rival Vassar College, 8-1. The Thoroughbreds will now wait for a possible NCAA Division III tournament bid, which will soon be announced.

Baseball dropped a doubleheader at Clarkson Friday, but rebounded to sweep the Golden Knights Saturday, as freshman Brian Lowry (West Hartford, Conn.) extended his hit streak to 22 games with a 2-for-4 performance in the Thoroughbreds? 3-1 win in game two on Sunday.

Softball tallied a 3-3 record over the week, with two wins over MCLA and a split with Utica. Freshman pitcher Sam Crose earned her 17th victory of the season and eighth shutout of the year with a 3-0 blank of Utica College on Sunday. She also had two wins over MCLA, 6-1, 8-0.

The women?s lacrosse team concluded its season a 15-5 loss to 14th-ranked William Smith Saturday and fell 17-5 to sixth-ranked Hamilton College Sunday. Sophomore Kimberly Segalas (Stamford, Conn.) scored three goals against Hamilton to finish the season with 41.
