Season ends for men?s and women?s tennis, baseball

The fifth-ranked Middlebury College men?s tennis team defeated Skidmore, 5-0, Sunday afternoon in the third round of the NCAA tournament to end the Thoroughbreds? season.

Skidmore, which had a 16-3 record, had won five straight before the NCAA third round, including the program?s first-ever NCAA tournament win, over M.I.T on Saturday.

The baseball squad came up short in its quest for another Liberty League championship, falling in a 14-13 thriller to Clarkson University Sunday afternoon. The Thoroughbreds defeated RPI in Friday?s first round, 8-7, before dropping a 9-7 decision to Clarkson Saturday. That led to a must-win on Sunday.

Junior outfielder Mike Jaffe (Wynnewood, Pa.) was selected to the nine-player all-tournament team, while freshman Brian Lowry, the 2009 Liberty League Rookie of the Year, put up a 4-for-5 performance in the loss with two runs scored and two RBI.  The Thoroughbreds finished the season with a 22-21 record.

The women?s tennis team earned a 5-0 shutout of Hunter College Saturday in the NCAA first round before falling to top-ranked Amherst College Sunday.  Freshman Allie Burns and senior Stephanie Abrams put up a strong fight against the Lord Jeffs at number-two doubles, coming up just short in the 8-6 tiebreaker for the 9-8 decision.
