Activities

Catherine Golden, professor of English, presented a paper titled ?Gilman?s Contemplation of Colors that ?Creep Down My Bedroom Wall-Softly-Slowly? ? in ?Through This? (1893) at the American Literature Association conference May 22 in Boston.

Jay Rogoff, lecturer in English, gave a talk, ?Copp lia?s Story: From Paris to Saratoga,? before the New York City Ballet performance of Copp lia July 15 at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC). On July 14 he conducted a pre-performance interview at SPAC with NYCB principal dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millepied about his new ballet, Quasi Una Fantasia. On July 17, Rogoff read his poem ?Sonnambula? dedicated to NYCB ballerina Darci Kistler at the National Museum of Dance?s tribute to Kistler following her final performances in Saratoga.

Publications, Exhibitions, Performances

Victor Cahn, professor of English, stars as Felix Unger in Curtain Call Theatre?s production of ?The Odd Couple,? which runs through Oct. 10 at the theater, 210 Old Loudon Road, Latham.

Penny Loretto, assistant director of career services, is the author of ?Strategies for Finding a Job in a Tough Job Market? published in the July 17 edition of the ?Employment Quarterly? of Saratoga Today and ?Finding a Job in a Tough Economy,? published in The Healing Springs Journal, August/September 2009, No. 45.

David Miller, professor emeritus of art, has work included in the following exhibitions:
    - 24 paintings in a solo exhibition at the Prime Restaurant, Saratoga National Golf Course, through Oct. 1;
    - Nine paintings featured in an invitational titled ?Out of This World? in the main gallery (third floor) of the Albany International Airport, through Nov. 29;
    - 19 paintings in an invitational titled ?Selected Skidmore Art Faculty,? open through Oct. 24 at the Riverfront Gallery in Schuylerville;
    - Seven paintings in an invitational, ?Surface Tension,? at the Albany International Airport Concourse Gallery through Jan. 17, 2010
    In addition, he will contribute 10 paintings to a Three-Artist Invitational at the Southern Vermont Arts Center in Manchester, Vt., Oct. 31-Dec. 1.

David H. Porter, president emeritus and Tisch Family Distinguished Professor, is co-author (with Lucy Marks of Drew University) of Seeking Life Whole:  Willa Cather and the Brewsters (Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 2009). Drawing on archives only recently made available, the book both explores a previously unknown chapter in Willa Cather's life and offers the first full portrait of two artists, Earl Brewster and Achsah Barlow, whose lives are as fascinating as they are unbelievable.

Jay Rogoff, lecturer in English, has published an essay titled ?Philip Roth?s Master Fictions,? in The Southern Review, Vol. 45, No. 3, September 2009.  The piece focuses on Roth?s novels and memoirs of the late 1980s, an on his recent novel Indignation.  Rogoff also has published the following poems:  ?Beginning? and ?Fall? in Notre Dame Review, No. 28, Summer/Fall 2009; ?The Protestant Cemetery? in Southern Humanities Review, Vol. 43, No. 3, Summer 2009; and ?Adagio? in The Hopkins Review, Vol. 2, No. 3, Summer 2009. His poem ?Sonnambula? was printed in the programs for both the Saratoga Performing Arts Center?s New York City Ballet gala, held July 11, and the National Museum of Dance?s July 17 tribute to ballerina Darci Kistler on the occasion of her final Saratoga performance.

Peter Stake, associate professor of art, was one of 16 artists invited to create works based on plays presented at Home Made Theater over the past 25 years for a special exhibition/fund raiser at the Spring Street Gallery.  Titled ?From Stage to Studio? and running through Sept. 18, the works in the exhibition are available for sale with a percentage of proceeds to benefit HMT.

Sandy Baum, professor of economics, is the author of ?Hysteria Over High Tuition Distracts from Real Solutions for Students,? an essay in the Sept. 7 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Penny Loretto, assistant director of Career Services, is the author of ?Recession-Proof Job-Search Strategies for New Graduates? published in the Sept. 2 issue of the Glens Falls Post-Star.

Jackie Murray, assistant professor of classics, was interviewed by The Saratogian for a ?Who? What? When? Where? Why?? feature published Sept. 5.

Paul Sattler, associate professor of art, and his wife Jennifer were the subjects of a cover story in the September edition of Spirit of Saratoga, the magazine published by The Saratogian.

Gordon Thompson, professor of music, was a source for a story titled ?Remeet the Beatles? in the Sept. 9 issue of the Los Angeles Times about the excitement surrounding the release of videogame The Beatles: Rock Band and recordings of the remastered Beatles catalogue.
