Women's soccer upset highlights Thoroughbreds' week

Skidmore's women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to six with a 1-0 victory Sunday over fifth-ranked Amherst.   Freshman Rebecca Russo (Belmont, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal and sophomore goalie Megan Sleezer (Gloversville, N.Y.) made seven saves in the upset. On Saturday, the Thoroughbreds defeated Wellesley College 3-1 behind senior Jenni Hibbard (Dedham, Mass.), who tallied a goal and an assist.   Women's soccer is now 5-1-1 on the season.

Volleyball finished 3-1 at the Union Invitational.   Junior Meredith Palmer (Montvale, N.J.) averaged 14 kills and four blocks over the four matches and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Senior Lauren Dinsdale (Harrington Park, N.J.) became just the eighth Division III player to record 3,000 career digs.

Field hockey opened Liberty League play with a 6-1 victory over Union.   Senior Elise Britt (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) scored two goals and junior Liz Catinella (Sudbury, Mass.) made five saves as the Thoroughbreds improved to 4-1 on the season.

Women's tennis opened its season with a 9-0 victory Saturday over Hamilton.   Junior Danika Robison (South Burlington, Vt.) led the way, winning 6-3, 6-1 at number-one singles and combined with freshman Nataly Mendoza (San Francisco, Calif.) to win 8-1 at number-one doubles.

Men's soccer finished the week at 1-1. Junior Doug Yeates (Richmond, Vt.) scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Utica and also scored on a penalty kick in Saturday's 3-2 loss at Plattsburgh. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
