Action-packed weekend yields results for Thoroughbreds
Women's soccer won both games over the weekend, defeating Liberty League foes Vassar and RPI by identical scores of 2-1 to remain a perfect 4-0 in league play. Sophomore Elena Stansky (Worcester, Mass.) scored a goal in each game, including the game-winner with less than eight minutes left against Vassar. Freshman Kelsey Yam's (Longmeadow, Mass.) first collegiate goal would prove to be the game-winner against RPI. Skidmore is now 10-2-1 and hosts Union College at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Volleyball posted a 3-1 record this weekend, earning second at the Interleague Challenge at Union College. Senior All-American Lauren Dinsdale (Harrington Park, N.J.) made the All-Tournament team after setting a new team record for career digs in the team's 3-0 victory over Potsdam. Junior Meredith Palmer (Montvale, N.J.) averaged 15.25 kills and four blocks over the four games. The Thoroughbreds improved to 16-5 and will participate in the Sage Invite this weekend at Sage College.
Field hockey finished 1-1 this week, highlighted by a 4-1 Saturday victory over 18 th-ranked Hamilton. Junior Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) tallied a goal in each game, including the lone goal in Friday's 2-1 OT loss to St. Lawrence. Senior Elise Britt (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) scored her team-leading 12 th goal of the season and was one of four different Thoroughbreds to score against Hamilton. Skidmore is now 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the conference, and travels to Castleton on Wednesday.
Golf started the week finishing third at the Gordin-Myers Classic, a tournament that featured the nation's top seven Division III teams. Junior Matt Canavan (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) was the top Skidmore finisher, tying for eighth with a 76-73-72--221 and junior Joe Flowers (Benton, Maine) tied for ninth with a 73-71-78--222. They finished out the week by winning the Hamilton Invitational by 12 strokes. Canavan led the way for the Thoroughbreds, finishing second after shooting a 71-77--148. Senior Brendan Singleton (Rye, N.H.) and sophomore Peter Anderson (Wellesley, Mass.) tied for eight after they each shot a 77-76--153.
Men's tennis had a successful weekend at the Wallach Invite at Bates College. Sophomore Max Bevan (Convent Station, N.J.) won the D Singles tournament and teamed with fellow sophomore Ethan Bond (Beverly Hills, Calif.) to win the B Doubles tournament. Bevan defeated Brett Byron of Brandeis 6-1, 6-0 in the finals of his singles tournament and combined with Bond to beat Jeff Beaton and Sawyer Lawson of Bates College in the B Doubles championship. Bond was also able to reach the finals of the C Singles tournament but lost a three-set match to Steven Milo of Brandeis 4-6, 7-5, 10-8.
Women's tennis junior Danika Robison (South Burlington, Vt.) and freshman Nataly Mendoza (San Francisco, Calif.) reached the quarterfinals of this weekend's Middlebury Doubles Tournament at Middlebury College. Robison and Mendoza breezed through their round robin-draw, dropping just two sets in their three matches before falling to eventual champions Brittney Berckes and Laura Danzig of Amherst, 8-3. Women's tennis travels to UAlbany Tuesday.
Men's soccer lost both games this weekend on the road; falling 3-1 at Vassar and 2-1 against sixth-ranked RPI. Junior Matt Kelsey (Cambridge, Mass.) scored at Vassar and fellow junior Greg Lloyd (Allendale, N.J.) scored the lone goal at RPI.
