Winter sports open with busy week
Skidmore's winter sports teams open their season with seven games in this upcoming week.
Men's basketball begins their 2009-10 season with a home matchup against SUNY Cobleskill at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17. The Thoroughbreds will travel to New York City on Saturday for the NYU Tip-Off Tournament, where they will play host NYU and either Ferrum or Elmira on Sunday afternoon. Skidmore finished last season with an 8-17 record and ranked sixth in the Liberty League preseason coaches' poll.
Women's basketball will host the annual Skidmore Invitational beginning Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Sports and Recreation Center. Skidmore plays Elmira at 4 p.m. Saturday and St. John Fisher at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Thoroughbreds ranked second in the Liberty League preseason coaches poll after finishing the 2008-09 season with an 11-15 record.
Ice hockey opens the 2009-10 campaign with two home games this weekend at the Saratoga Springs Ice Rink. The Thoroughbreds will play New England College at 7 p.m. Friday and Saint Anselm at 4 p.m. Saturday. Hockey finished 13-10-3 last season.
Fall sports wrap-up: Field hockey, women's soccer seasons end in NCAA's
The field hockey team's season ended in Sunday's quarterfinal loss to Tufts. Junior Carolyne McManama (Medfield, Mass.) scored the lone goal and junior goalie Liz Catinella (Sudbury, Mass.) stopped four shots in the 4-1 loss. On Saturday, the Thoroughbreds won an exciting second-round matchup, defeating Amherst 4-3. Four different players scored for Skidmore in the victory, including junior Brittany O'Brien's (Ridgefield, Conn.) game-winning goal with just over four minutes remaining. Field hockey ended the season with a 17-4 record, which included a 10-game winning streak before Sunday's loss.
Women's soccer lost an NCAA first-round matchup 1-0 to Oneonta on Saturday. The Thoroughbreds gave up an early goal and were not able to recover. Sophomore goalie Meghan Sleezer (Gloversville, N.Y.) was strong in net, making eight saves for Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds ended their season with an 11-5-3 record.
Men's and women's swimming and diving both lost at St. Michael's College last weekend. Senior Sonia Segal-Smith (Needham, Mass.) won the 100 free and 200 IM on the women's side while sophomore Doug Pilawa (Chardon, Ohio) took first in the 1-Meter and 3-Meter diving events for the men. Swimming and diving will return to action Saturday, Nov. 21, at Utica College. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
