Busy week for Skidmore athletics

Ice hockey went 1-1 this week, splitting a pair of overtime games.   The Thoroughbreds defeated Wesleyan 4-3 on Friday and fell 2-1 on Saturday to Trinity.   Against Wesleyan, junior Alex Mykolenko (Kharkov, Ukraine) scored the game-winner with 44 seconds remaining, and also added two assists.   Freshman Zach Menard (Burlington, Mass.) had two goals and junior Hunter Thayer (Shelburne, Vt.) added a goal and two assists.   Thayer scored the lone goal and sophomore Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J.) made 31 saves in the loss to Trinity to finish the weekend with 54 saves. Skidmore travels to Plattsburgh for a non-conference game at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12.

Women's basketball finished a 1-1 week with a 68-52 victory Saturday over Middlebury. Senior Sharlyn Harper (New York, NY) led four Thoroughbreds in double figures, scoring a game-high 22 points while adding four rebounds, three assists, three steals, and three blocks. Sophomore Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, N.Y.) added 15 points and four blocks, while classmate Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.) and senior Dana Leonard (Cooperstown, N.Y.) each had 10 points.   Skidmore is now 8-3 on the season and opens league play at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, in a game at Union College.

Men's basketball dropped two tough games this week to Norwich and no. 7 Middlebury.  Junior Jeff Altimar had a team-high 14 points while sophomore Brian Lowry (West Hartford, Conn.) came off the bench to score 13 and classmate Kyle Clark (New York, N.Y.) chipped in with 11 at Norwich. Lowry led the charge on Saturday, posting 20 points off the bench in the Thoroughbreds' 67-80 loss to the Panthers.   Skidmore has a 7-4 record and will open Liberty League play at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Union. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
