Men's, women's basketball off to fast start in league play

Men's basketball opened Liberty League play with three victories, including a 47-point victory at Union. Senior Jon Douglas (Amherst, Mass.) scored a game-high 26 points and tied a Skidmore record with eight three-pointers Tuesday against Union. During the weekend, junior Jeff Altimar (Medfield, Mass.) scored 26 points to help beat Hobart and sophomore John Mantas (Niskayuna, N.Y.) had 11 points as 11 different Thoroughbreds scored in the victory over Hamilton. Skidmore is 3-0 in the league, 10-4 overall and will host Clarkson at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22.

Women's basketball was victorious over Union, William Smith, and Hamilton in a busy week of Liberty League action. Senior Sharlyn Harper (New York, N.Y.) averaged 20.3 points in each game. In the two weekend contests, senior Dana Leonard (Cooperstown, N.Y.) averaged 10 points and eight rebounds while sophomore Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.) averaged 11 points off the bench. The Thoroughbreds improved to 11-2 overall, 3-0 in the league, and will host Clarkson at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22.

Ice hockey finished a 2-1 week with two league victories on the road. Sophomore Tyler Doremus (Aspen, Co.) had a pair of game-winning goals, including an overtime goal in the victory over UMass Boston. Senior Matt Czerkowicz (Blackstone, Mass.) also had two goals during the week while sophomore Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J.) made 49 saves in a pair of victories. Skidmore is now 7-8 overall, 6-3 in the league, and will host Amherst at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22.

Men's swimming and diving returned to action this weekend at RPI's Henry Kumpf Invitational. Sophomore Doug Pilawa (Chardon, Ohio) swept the diving events, scoring 252.40 in the 1-meter and 281.50 in the 3-meter. Senior John Tyler Norton (Chappaqua, N.Y.) finished 10th in both the 50 free and the 200 breaststroke. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
