Thoroughbreds eye post-season tournament action

The women's basketball team will host the Liberty League tournament on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26-27. The Thoroughbreds finished the regular season with a 20-4 overall and 12-2 league record, earning them the top seed in the upcoming tournament.   Senior Sharlyn Harper (New York, N.Y.) leads Skidmore with 14.2 points per game and classmate Dana Leonard (Cooperstown, N.Y.) is averaging a team-high 6.9 rebounds per game. The Thoroughbreds will play Hamilton in the semifinals at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, in the Sports and Recreation Center.

Men's basketball earned the No. Two seed in the Liberty League after a 71-57 win Saturday at Clarkson.   On Friday night, senior Jon Douglas (Amherst, Mass.) scored 19 points and became the 12 ^th player in Skidmore history to record 1,000 career points. The Thoroughbreds are currently 16-9 overall and 9-5 in the conference. Junior Jeff Altimar (Medfield, Mass.) leads Skidmore with 11.4 points per game and nine different players have averaged at least five points a night. The Thoroughbreds will take on No. Three-seed Hobart at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, at St. Lawrence. 

Ice hockey is the fifth seed in the ECAC Men's East hockey tournament. Skidmore ended the regular season with an 8-15-2 overall and 7-10-2 conference record. Junior Alex Mykolenko (Kharkov, Ukraine) leads the Thoroughbreds in scoring with 22 points (four goals, 18 assists) and sophomores Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J.) and Andrew Ross (McKinney, Texas) have split time in goal, combining to make 55 saves in two games this weekend. Skidmore will travel to Southern Maine for the ECAC East quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27.

Men's swimming and diving will compete in the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association meet Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 25-27.   Sophomore diver Doug Pilawa (Chardon, Ohio) will compete with other top divers in the state and others will look to compete and improve on career best times. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
