Busy weekend for Thoroughbred athletes

Hockey defeated Southern Maine, 6-3 to advance to the ECAC Men's East semifinal. Skidmore scored five unanswered goals after trailing 3-1 and junior Alex Mykolenko (Kharkov, Ukraine) scored a game-winning short-handed goal. Sophomore Andrew Ross (McKinney, Texas) recorded 29 saves in goal for the Thoroughbreds. Skidmore improved to 9-15-2 on the season and will face Babson at 7 p.m. March 5 in the ECAC East semifinals.

Women's basketball defeated Hamilton in the semifinals but lost a hard-fought Liberty League championship game to RPI. Senior Sharlyn Harper (New York, N.Y.) had 19 points and 11 rebounds and classmate Amber Kinsey (Troy, N.Y.) added 13 points, eight rebounds, and four steals in the semifinal win over Hamilton. Against RPI, Harper scored a game-high 23 points and Kinsey had 10 points and 12 rebounds. They both earned All-Tournament Team recognition. Skidmore finished the season at 21-5, tying the school record for most victories in a season.

Men's basketball lost to Hobart in the Liberty League semifinal matchup at St. Lawrence. Sophomore Terron Victoria (Albany, N.Y.) led the Thoroughbreds with 14 points and classmate Gerard O'Shea (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) added 13. Victoria earned All-Tournament team honors as Skidmore ended the season with a school-record 16 wins for a 16-10 overall record.

Men's lacrosse opened up the season with a dominating 16-4 victory at Babson. Nine different players scored for the Thoroughbreds, highlighted by senior Rob Lutin (Port Washington, N.Y.) and freshman J.P. Sullivan (Floral Park, N.Y.) each tallying three goals and two assists. Skidmore will host Hartwick at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 6.

Men's tennis went 1-1 this week, falling to Vassar and beating the College of New Jersey. Freshman Alex Fromson (Newton, Mass.) and sophomore Max Bevan (Convent Station, N.J.) both won their singles matches and teamed up to win their doubles match, 8-3, against the College of New Jersey. Men's tennis will return to action March 16 at Whittier.

Women's tennis earned a 9-0 victory Saturday over Rensselaer. Senior Danika Robison (South Burlington, Vt.) won at number-one singles and teamed up with freshman Nataly Mendoza (San Francisco, Calif.) (who won number-four singles), to win number-one doubles. The Thoroughbreds host William Smith at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 6. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
