Spring sports hit fast pace

Baseball opened league play and took three of four games from Vassar over the weekend. In Saturday's doubleheader split at Vassar, senior Anthony Ferri (Jersey City, N.J.) finished 7-for-9 with three runs and two RBI while junior Trevor Brucato (Stamford, Conn.) earned the victory in game two. In Sunday's home opener, Skidmore came from behind twice to sweep the Brewers and improve to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in the league.   Senior Spencer Marcus (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and sophomore Drew Levinson (Chappaqua, N.Y.) both picked up wins on the mound and freshman Leejay Pollacchi (Porter Corners, N.Y.) had a walk-off RBI single to secure the sweep. The Thoroughbreds host Plattsburgh at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 31.

Softball now has a 2-2 record. Sophomore Sam Crose (Assonet, Mass.) finished the week at 1-1, allowing four runs (0 earned) while striking out 21 and walking three in 18 innings of work. Junior Caitlin Ketcham (North Clarendon, Vt.) and freshman Julia Schwartz (Bryn Mawr, Pa) led Skidmore's offense. Ketcham finished the week with two homeruns and three doubles while driving in three and Schwartz had two homeruns and six RBI. The Thoroughbreds are now 7-7 overall and are scheduled to host Middlebury at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, in a non-conference doubleheader.

Men's lacrosse fell to 4-2 overall after a neutral-site loss to No. 9 Tufts at Hofstra.   Senior Rob Lutin (Port Washington, N.Y.) and junior Matt Levesque (Duxbury, Mass.) each tallied three goals and senior Cory Barkoff (Woodbury, N.Y.) added two goals and two assists. Senior Flip Bongaerts (New Canaan, Conn.) made nine saves in goal for the Thoroughbreds. Skidmore opens league play Wednesday, March 31, at Rensselaer.

Women's lacrosse is now 3-2 after Sunday's non-conference loss at Trinity. Junior Lauren McCarthy (Ipswich, Mass.) scored three goals and sophomore Lauren Madden (Huntington, N.Y.) added two goals for the Thoroughbreds. Women's lacrosse hosts Smith College at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 31.

Women's tennis suffered a pair of losses to ranked opponents at this weekend's Fab Five Tournament.   Junior Rachel Loeb (Greenwood Village, Colo.) posted a 3-1 record and freshman Brittany Trimble (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) earned a pair of wins against University of Mary Washington.   Loeb won both of her matches at number-two singles and teamed with Trimble to win number-three doubles in Saturday's match. Skidmore returns to action Saturday, April 3, at the College of New Jersey.

Men's tennis suffered a 4-5 loss Saturday against Stevens Tech. Sophomore Luke Granger (Allendale, N.J.) picked up a pair of wins, winning 6-3, 6-4 at number-one singles and joining with classmate Max Bevan (Convent Station, N.J.) to win 8-1 at number-two doubles.
