3 spring teams heading to Liberty League tournaments

Softball swept St. Lawrence and clinched a spot in the first-ever Liberty League softball tournament. Sophomore Sam Crose (Assonet, Mass.) earned a pair of wins Saturday, starting in game one and picking up the win in relief in game two's 1-0, extra-inning victory. Senior Arielle Manstein (Elkins Park, Pa.) had the go-ahead two-RBI single in game one and drove in the only run of the game in the nightcap. The Thoroughbreds wrap up Liberty League play Wednesday, May 5, at Rensselaer. 

Baseball finished the week 3-2 and clinched a postseason berth with Sunday's doubleheader sweep at Union. In Wednesday's loss to Middlebury, sophomore Brian Lowry (West Hartford, Conn.) had two home runs and five RBI. After dropping game one on Saturday, senior Derek Stork (Penn Yan, N.Y.) tossed a complete game one-hitter and junior Rob Rubestein (Highland Park, N.J.) drove in three runs in the 6-0 win. In Sunday's sweep at Union, freshman Leejay Pollacchi (Porter Corners, N.Y.) went 4-for-6 and senior Anthony Ferri (Jersey City, N.J.) drove in three runs. The Thoroughbreds host Oneonta at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 4.

Men's lacrosse secured the No. 3 seed in the league tournament with Saturday's 10-6 win at Clarkson. Senior Cory Barkoff (Woodbury, N.Y) led the way for Skidmore, scoring three goals and adding an assist.   Freshman Mike Holden (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) added two goals and senior goalie Flip Bongaerts (New Canaan, Conn.) recorded seven saves.   The Thoroughbreds are at Union at 4 p.m. Friday, May 7, for the league semifinals.

Women's lacrosse posted an 0-3 record this past week, falling to Middlebury, William Smith, and No. 1 Hamilton. Sophomore Lauren Madden (Huntington, N.Y.) had eight goals and an assist during the week and junior Lauren McCarthy finished the week with five goals and an assist. Skidmore finished the 2010 season with a 7-10 overall record and a 3-5 league record. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
