Fast start for fall athletics teams

Men's soccer is off to a 3-0 start after outscoring their opponents 9-0. In the season opener at Bard, junior Diego Reinero (Princeton, N.J.) tallied both goals to lead the Thoroughbreds to a 2-0 win. In two games at the Cardinal Classic hosted by Plattsburgh, Skidmore picked up a 3-0 victory over Southern Maine and was 4-0 against Lehman College. Senior Matt Kelsey (Cambridge, Mass.) was named offensive MVP for his three goals and an assist. Senior Doug Yeates(Richmond, Vt.) was also named to the All-Tournament Team. The Thoroughbreds return to action Friday, Sept. 10, when they host St. Vincent in the opening game of the 2010 Skidmore Classic at 7 p.m. at Wachenheim Field.

Volleyball is 2-0 after a pair of wins over Union and Sage at Union College last Friday night.   Against Union, senior Meredith Palmer (Montvale, N.J.) had 10 kills and two blocks while junior Kelley Vershbow (Washington, D.C.) added 13 kills and sophomore Carolyn Bottelier (Washington, D.C.) had eight kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Mallory Mendelsohn (San Francisco, Calif.) added 34 assists. Against Sage, Palmer had eight kills and two blocks, while Mendelsohn finished with 24 assists and three aces. Skidmore resumes play Sept. 10 against Geneseo in the first day of the Ithaca Invitational.

Field hockey ended opening week with a 1-1 record, picking up an 8-1 win against Castleton and falling 3-0 at fifth-ranked Cortland. The Thoroughbreds had seven different players score against Castleton as junior Annie Rosencrans (Riverside, Conn.) finished with two goals and two assists and senior Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) had a goal and two assists.   Skidmore hosts SUNY New Paltz at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at Thoroughbred Field.

Women's soccer hosted the Skidmore Invitational to open the 2010 season. The Thoroughbreds finished 1-1, falling 2-0 to Plattsburgh and beating SUNY New Paltz 4-1. Against New Paltz, junior Elena Stansky (Worcester, Mass.) scored two goals and classmates Lauren Madden (Huntington, N.Y.) and Gabi Palacio (Rochester, N.Y.) each added a goal. Skidmore takes on host Cortland in the first game of the Red Dragon Invitational at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 11. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
