Multiple victories in action-packed weekend

Women's soccer finished 1-0-1 at the Red Dragon Classic this past weekend. On Saturday, the Thoroughbreds came from behind twice to force a 2-2 tie against host Cortland. Senior Lindsay Schmitt (Mendon, Mass.) and sophomore Kelsey Yam (Longmeadow, Mass.) both scored for Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds earned a 3-1 win over Kenyon behind a pair of goals from freshman Christine Bellotti (Medfield, Mass.). Skidmore is now 2-1-1 on the season and will host Manhattanville at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, at Wachenheim Field.
Volleyball posted a 3-1 record at this weekend's Ithaca College Bomber Invitational, earning wins over Geneseo, Union, and Rutgers-Newark. Senior Meredith Palmer (Montvale, N.J.) averaged 12.25 kills and 5.25 blocks, while sophomore Mallory Mendelsohn (San Francisco, Calif.) averaged 37.5 assists per match, including 52 assists and three aces in a five-set win over Union. The Thoroughbreds improved to 5-1 on the season and return to action this weekend at the Union College Invitational.
Field hockey posted a 5-1 win over SUNY New Paltz in its only action this past week. Senior Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) scored three goals and had an assist and freshman Kelly Blackhurst (North River, N.Y.) scored her first two collegiate goals for 10 th-ranked Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds are 2-1 and open league play at 2 p.m. Saturday when they host local rival Union College.
Men's soccer suffered its first loss of the season, 3-0 against RIT in the Skidmore Alumni Invitational. In the opening game, the Thoroughbreds played Saint Vincent to a 0-0 tie behind senior Steve Vasquez's (Central Falls, R.I.) second shutout of the season. Skidmore's record stands at 3-1-1. The team will travel to Utica College on Wednesday, Sept. 15, for a 7 p.m. start.
Men's tennis opened its fall schedule at the Middlebury Invitational. Senior Yahia Iman (Cairo, Egypt) and freshman Oliver Loutsenko (Bellmore, N.Y.) each reached the semifinals of the C singles flight and freshman Danny Knight (Ponte Verda, Fla.) reached the semifinals in the D singles. The Thoroughbreds host Connecticut College at noon Sunday, Sept. 19.
Women's tennis began the fall campaign at the Williams Invitational this past weekend. Freshman Keirsten Sires (Easton, Conn.) posted a 3-0 record in singles and a 1-1 record in doubles. All three singles wins came against Middlebury, last year's NCAA regional runner-up. Skidmore hosts Connecticut College at 3 p.m. Sept. 19. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
