Full slate of action as semester winds down

Ice hockey went 1-0-1 in this week's action, highlighted by a 7-6 overtime victory over No. 4 Bowdoin during Friday's "Pack The Rink" event. A crowd estimated at close to 800 saw senior Alex Mykolenko (Kharkiv, Ukraine) score 2:31 into overtime to lift the Thoroughbreds to victory. Sophomore Zack Menard (Burlington, Mass.) had two goals and junior Nick Dupuis (Holyoke, Mass.) had a goal and two assists. On Saturday, Skidmore skated to a 3-3 tie with Colby behind goals from Dupuis and sophomores Julian Malakorn (Warwick, R.I.) and Brendan Cottam (Belmont, Mass.). Junior Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J.) made 21 saves against Bowdoin and classmate Andrew Ross (McKinney, Texas) stopped 29 shots against Colby.

The Thoroughbreds are now 3-3-1 on the season and 2-1-1 in the league; they will host Plattsburgh at the Saratoga City Rink at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7. 

Men's basketball posted a 2-1 record this week, with the loss coming in the championship game of the Hilton Garden Inn Invitational. On Tuesday, Skidmore picked up an 87-78 win over Hartwick behind 21 points from senior Jeff Altimar (Medfield, Mass.) and 20 points off the bench from junior Melvis Langyintuo (Tamale, Ghana). On Saturday, the team rolled to an 87-48 win over Bard in the tournament's opening game as Altimar and Langyintuo, and juniors Terron Victoria (Albany, N.Y.), Kyle Clark (New York, N.Y.), and Brian Lowry (West Hartford, Conn.) all scored in double figures. In the championship game, they dropped a tough 64-62 decision to Utica. Altimar and junior Gerard O'Shea (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) were selected to the All-Tournament Team. The Thoroughbreds are 4-2 on the year and host Castleton for an 8 p.m. tip Tuesday at the Williamson Sports Center.

Women's basketball went 1-2 in three games this week. The team notched a dominating 89-37 win over Hartwick on Tuesday but then dropped two games in the Williams Classic, hosted by Williams College. Against Hartwick, sophomore Logan Frederick (Arlington, Va.) had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds and junior Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.) led six Skidmore players in double-digits with 15 points. In the losses to Trinity and Williams, senior Ismatu Alison-Konteh (Bronx, N.Y.) tallied 16 points and 17 rebounds en route to being named to the All-Tournament Team. Skidmore is 2-4 on the young season and wraps up the fall semester Tuesday, hosting Potsdam at 6 p.m.

Men's and women's swimming and diving ended its semester at the Liberty League Championships, this past weekend at Union. For the women, freshman Sarah Shaw (Merion, Pa.) took ninth in the 200 butterfly and 10 th in both the 400 IM and 1650 freestyle. Classmate Katherine Kelloway (Marblehead, Mass.) took ninth in the 400 IM, sophomore Carrie Koch (Wellesley, Mass.) finished 10 th in the 200 free and fellow sophomore Kristen Stearns (Torrington, Conn.) placed ninth in the 3-meter dive. On the men's side, senior Stephen Lento (Cincinnati, Ohio) placed 11 th in the 1650 free and 13 th in the 400 IM, while sophomore Jesse Adler (Chappaqua, N.Y.) was 13 th in the 100 back and 200 back and junior diver Rob Zilinyi (Fairfield, Conn.) took ninth in the 1-meter. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
