League play under way for Thoroughbred winter teams

Men's basketball posted a 2-1 record this past week in a trio of Liberty League contests. In Tuesday's 67-41 win over Union, junior Melvis Langyintuo (Tamale, Ghana) scored a game-high 15 points and classmate Kyle Clark (New York, N.Y.) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Against Hobart, junior Terron Victoria (Albany, N.Y.) led the Thoroughbreds with 15 points and junior Brian Lowry (West Hartford, Conn.) chipped in with 10 off the bench. In Saturday's win at Hamilton, Lowry had a game-high 19 off the bench, including five three-pointers and Gerard O'Shea (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) added 10 points. Skidmore is now 2-1 in the Liberty League and an 8-5 overall record; the team returns to action Friday, Jan. 21, at Clarkson for an 8 p.m. tip-off. 

Women's basketball went 2-1 this week in its first Liberty League games of the season. In Tuesday's loss to Union freshman Michela Ottati (Fort Johnson, N.Y.) and junior Jessie Kavana (Mahopac, N.Y.) each had 15 points. In Friday's 88-82 OT win at William Smith, junior Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, N.Y.) had 27 points and 10 rebounds to lead five Skidmore players in double figures and classmate Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) added 14 points and six assists. On Sunday, Gaugler gave the Thoroughbreds the win, hitting a three-pointer with 12 seconds remaining to seal a 63-61 win at Hamilton. She finished with 14 points and Kavana and Ottati each added 11. Skidmore moved to 2-1 in the Liberty League and 6-7 overall; the team will resume play Jan. 21 at Clarkson.

Ice hockey went 0-2 this past week, falling to Babson and in overtime to UMass Boston. Against Babson, junior Nick Dupuis (Holyoke, Mass.) scored as classmate Andrew Ross (McKinney, Texas) made 34 stops in goal. Against UMass Boston, senior Alex Mykolenko (Kharkiv, Ukraine) scored a power play goal and junior Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J.) made 16 saves. The Thoroughbreds are 3-10-2 overall and 2-5-2 in the league; they will return to action at 7 p.m. Jan. 21 at Amherst. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
