New exhibition to showcase recent work by Regis Brodie

Regis Brodie, ceramic artist and emeritus professor of art at Skidmore, will exhibit recent work in an exhibition titled Convergences/Currents at the Schick Art Gallery from May 9 to June 19. An opening reception is scheduled from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 9, in the gallery. Admission is free and open to the public. 

Brodie's distinctive ceramic vessels are known for their interplay of classical form and contemporary surface design. His influences are wide-ranging, and include classical sculpture, early 20 ^th century architecture, Abstract Expressionist and Postmodern painting. The exhibition, while predominantly focused on his ceramic art, also includes rarely shown paintings by Brodie.

Brodie joined the Skidmore faculty in 1969. For 36 years he directed the College's Summer Six Program. He holds an M.F.A. degree from Tyler School of Art at Temple University, and earned a M.Ed. degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He has received numerous awards in his field, including the 2004-05 Residency Program in Yeoju, Korea, an International Symposium for Outdoor Ceramic Sculpture sponsored by the World Ceramic Exposition Foundation. He was one of 10 ceramic artists chosen from five countries to participate. He also recently received a New York State Art Teachers Association Special Citation Award for significant contributions to the field of art education in the state.

His work is included in major national and international university and museum collections, including the Albany Institute of History and Art; Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse; Long Beach Museum of Art, Long Beach, Calif.; Nelson Museum of Art at Arizona State University in Tempe; Skidmore's own Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery; the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, Philadelphia; and the National School of Ceramics in Madrid, Spain. In addition, his work is in the corporate collections of the following: Adirondack Trust Co., Saratoga Springs; Avon Products, Inc., world headquarters in New York City; Charles Wood Foundation Collection of Art in Glens Falls; General Electric Co. in Schenectady; the Saratoga Hospital, Saratoga Springs; and the Verizon Corp., White Plains, N.Y., among others.

He has given lectures and demonstrations extensively throughout his career at renowned institutions such as the Smithsonian, Princeton and Harvard universities, and at numerous international venues.
