Winter athletes post another successful week
Ice hockey went 1-1 this past weekend, posting a win over University of New England before dropping a tough game to Southern Maine. Sophomore Aaron Beck (Maribel, Wisc.) had two goals and an assist, while senior Nick Dupuis (Holyoke, Mass.) added a goal and two assists in the 6-2 win at New England. Against Southern Maine, freshman Tim Colvin (Brunswick, Ohio) and senior Tyler Doremus (Aspen, Colo.) each scored in the 4-2 loss. Freshman goalie Spencer Sodokoff (Greenwich, Conn.) started both games, making 47 saves and allowing five goals on the weekend. The Thoroughbreds are 5-10-2 overall and 4-6 in ECAC Men's East. They'll host New England College at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27.
Senior diver Doug Pilawa (Chardon, Ohio) earned another sweep, winning the 3-meter and 1-meter dives against Hartwick and breaking his own school record in the 3-meter. He was also victorious at Oneonta, winning the 1-meter six dive and 1-meter five dive. For the women, freshman Catherine King (Wellesley, Mass.) was a double-winner against Oneonta, taking first in the 50 Free and 100 Free, while junior Carrie Koch (Wellesley, Mass.) won the 500 Free and 200 Free against Oneonta and came back on Sunday to take first in the 1000 Free against Hartwick. Men's and women's swimming and diving hosts Rensselaer at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28.
Women's basketball posted a 2-0 record on the week, winning a pair of road games against Clarkson and Albany Pharmacy. Senior Jessie Kavana (Mahopac, N.Y.) led Skidmore with 14 points and freshman Angela Botiba (Douala, Cameroon) added 11 off the bench in the 63-48 Clarkson win. Against Albany Pharmacy, coach Darren Bennett earned his 100 th career victory behind 12 points apiece from junior Logan Frederick (Arlington, Va.) and Botiba. The Thoroughbreds are 11-3 overall and 4-1 in league play; they host St. Lawrence at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24.
Men's basketball went 1-1 this past week, defeating Clarkson and falling to No. 15 Williams. On Tuesday, senior Gerard O'Shea (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) scored a team-high 14 points and classmate Melvis Langyintuo (Tamale, Ghana) added 11 points and seven rebounds in the win at Clarkson. Against Williams, senior Terron Victoria (Albany, N.Y.) poured in a team-high 18 points and O'Shea added 13. Skidmore is 10-4 overall on the season and 4-1 in league play. The team will host St. Lawrence for an 8 p.m. tip Tuesday night. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
