Full slate of league action for winter sports
Men's basketball improved to 7-3 in league play and 13-6 overall with a weekend sweep of Liberty League opponents Vassar and Bard. In Friday's 69-41 win over the Brewers, freshman Connor Merrill (Panton, Vt.) posted 16 points, seven rebounds and two blocks, while senior Terron Victoria (Albany, N.Y.) also finished with 16 points. Against Bard, senior Melvis Langyintuo (Tamale, Ghana) scored a game-high 27 points and classmate Gerard O'Shea (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) added 16 points, eight assists and five rebounds in the 91-52 victory. Skidmore hosts Clarkson at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb 7.
Women's basketball went 1-1 on the week; dropping an overtime contest at Vassar before defeating Bard Saturday. At Vassar, senior Jessie Kavana (Mahopac, N.Y.) led four scorers in double digits with 16 points, while classmate Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.) added 15 points and nine rebounds.In the 61-34 win at Bard, senior Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, N.Y.) had 17 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks to lead the way and sophomore Jordyn Wartts (St. Louis, Mo.) chipped in with 10 points. The Thoroughbreds are now 12-7 overall and 5-5 in league play. They will host Clarkson at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Ice hockey went 1-1 in a pair of league road games this past week. On Friday, Skidmore suffered a 4-1 loss at Babson. Against Babson, sophomore Aaron Beck (Maribel, Wisc.) scored and senior goalie Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J.) finished with 22 saves. The Thoroughbreds bounced back on Saturday with a 4-2 win over UMass Boston behind 42 saves from Bessey and a goal and two assists from senior Tyler Doremus (Aspen, Colo.). The Thoroughbreds now stand at 8-11-2 overall and 7-7 in ECAC East play. They host No. 1 Norwich at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10.
Women's swimming & diving finished third in its annual Sprint Invitational this past
Saturday. Freshman Catherine King (Wellesley, Mass.) won four events, taking first in the 50 Free, 50 Fly, 200 Free
and was part of the winning 200 Free Relay with senior Elaine Burns (Worcester, Mass.),
junior Carrie Koch (Wellesley, Mass.) and sophomore Katherine Kelloway (Marblehead, Mass.). Koch also won the 100 Free and Kelloway took first in the 100
