Thoroughbred field hockey, men's soccer off to 2-0 starts

The No. 8 field hockey team posted a pair of home wins over Castleton and Babson this past weekend. In the 7-2 win over Castleton, junior Kelly Blackhurst (Johnsburg, N.Y.) tallied three goals and two assists while sophomore Sam Skott (Buskirk, N.Y.) added a pair of goals. In a 4-0 shutout of Babson, Blackhurst scored a pair and senior Ceilidh MacNeill (Framingham, Mass.) had a goal and an assist.   Skidmore returns to action Saturday, Sept. 8, when the team hosts New Paltz with a 1 p.m. start.

Men's soccer went 2-0 with a pair of shutout victories at the Plattsburgh Cardinal Classic. In a 2-0 victory over Lyndon State, sophomore Brock Bakewell (Tucson, Ariz.) and freshman Aldin Medunjanin (New York, N.Y.) scored while freshman goalie Eli Kisselbach (Stamford, Conn.) earned the shutout. In a 2-0 Johnson State game, senior Ike Okpoebo (Chelmsford, Mass.) and junior Gildas Girimana (Bronx, N.Y.) each tallied a goal. The Thoroughbreds travel to New Paltz today (Sept. 4) for a 4 p.m. game.

Volleyball was 2-2 at the Cortland State Red Dragon Classic. Skidmore was victorious Friday over Nazareth and Baruch before dropping a pair Saturday to Richard Stockton and host Cortland. Junior Corinne Palmer (Montvale, N.J.) was selected to the All-Tournament Team after posting 54 kills and 12 blocks in the four matches. The Thoroughbreds return to action Friday, Sept. 14 at the Union Invitational.

Women's soccer suffered a pair of losses to No. 3 Johns Hopkins and No. 21 TCNJ. Junior goalie Gab Lawrence (Yorktown, N.Y.) finished with 13 saves in the two games. Skidmore opens its home schedule Saturday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m. against Farmingdale State. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
