Men's tennis nails decisive victory

Men’s tennis was dominant in an 8-1 win Saturday against Trinity College. The Thoroughbreds swept doubles play competition and dropped just one match at number-three singles. Oliver Loutsenko ’14 beat Dan Carpenter 6-1, 6-4 at number-one singles and combined with Danny Knight ’14 for an 8-5 win at number-one doubles. The Thoroughbreds compete at the Wallach Invitational Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 12-13.

Gab Lawrence ’14 recorded her sixth consecutive shutout as women’s soccer battled to a 0-0 draw Wednesday against Middlebury College. The Thoroughbreds, who improved to 7-0-2 on the season, are currently 19th in the NSCAA/Continental Tire National Rankings. The team plays a pair of Liberty League matches this week, hosting Bard College at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, before traveling to Clarkson University for a 3 p.m. contest Saturday, Oct. 12.

A doubles sweep lifted women’s tennis to a 6-3 road win Saturday against SUNY New Paltz. Zoe Valella ’15 and Robyn Baird ’14 won a marathon number-one doubles match, Madeline Benn ’17 and Yumi Karlshoej ’15 won 8-5 at number two, and Caroline Hobbs ’16 and Rachel Plevinsky ’14 won 8-2 at number three. The team travels to Ithaca for the New York State Tournament Friday through Sunday, Oct. 11-13.

Field hockey bounced back from a 4-0 loss Tuesday to Middlebury with a thrilling 5-4 overtime win Saturday against SUNY Geneseo. Kelly Blackhurst ’14 netted the game-winner 11:26 into overtime. Dani DeGregory ’16 produced five points with two goals and an assist and Pauline Searles ’15 scored her first goal of the season. The 12th-ranked Thoroughbreds are on the road for back-to-back Liberty League contests this week, traveling to Vassar College Friday, Oct. 11, for a 4 p.m. game, and playing Union College at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12.

Nick Masiero ’17 tallied twice and Brock Bakewell ’15 and Tim Sullivan ’16 each added a goal as men’s soccer cruised to a 4-0 shutout Tuesday against Southern Vermont College. Eli Kisselbach ’16 made four saves Saturday, but the team dropped a hard-fought contest 1-0 against Williams College. The team hosts Liberty League rival Bard College at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8.

Volleyball was edged in a pair of Liberty League matches against Vassar and Clarkson Friday at Bard College. Corinne Palmer ’14 was Skidmore's top offensive performer in the Vassar match, registering 13 kills and one block, and Marcela Familiar-Bolanos ’17 led Skidmore defensively with 23 digs against Vassar and 16 digs in the Clarkson match. The Thoroughbreds earned a split Saturday at Vassar, downing Bard College after dropping a closely contested match against St. Lawrence. Emma Wilberg ’14 had a team-high in assists in both matches, notching 33 assists against St. Lawrence and 34 assists against Bard. The team participates at the Union Invitational Thursday and Friday, Oct. 10-11, following a match at Middlebury College Thursday, Oct. 10. ~ By Dan St.-Jacques
