Women's tennis undefeated at Blue/Grey Invite

Women’s tennis went undefeated at the Blue/Grey Invitational in Fredericksburg, Va., knocking off the University of Mary Washington, Case Western Reserve University, and Oberlin College. The 19th-ranked Thoroughbreds (10-2, 5-0 Liberty) beat No. 21 University of Mary Washington in their opening match, 6-3, before battling to a 5-4 win against No. 27 Case Western Reserve University and rolling past Oberlin College, 7-2, in its final match. Lee Ford ’14 and Madeline Benn ’17 contributed to two wins in the team’s closest match, against Case Western Reserve. Ford recorded a three-set win at number-two singles and Benn was a winner at number-three singles. The two also combined for an 8-5 win at number-one doubles. The Thoroughbreds will participate at the Wellesley Nor’easter Invite Friday through Sunday, April 4-6.

Men’s tennis cruised to a 9-0 win against Hobart College this past week before suffering its first Liberty League loss against RPI. Against Hobart, Jimmy Sherpa ’14 was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at number-one singles, also pairing with Nick Tong ’16 for an 8-1 win at number-two doubles. The Thoroughbreds (6-5, 4-1) got out to a 2-1 lead against the Engineers, winning two of three doubles matches, but RPI bounced back in singles play to squeak out the 6-5 win. Oliver Loutsenko ’14 and Danny Knight ’14 recorded an 8-2 win at number-one doubles and Sherpa and Tong posted a 9-8 (7-4) win at number-two doubles. The team travels to Amherst for a 1 p.m. match Sunday, April 6.

Women’s lacrosse bounced back from losses against Hamilton and Vassar colleges with a 14-4 win against Bard College. The team dropped a hard-fought battle against Vassar, holding at 6-4 with just under 12 minutes to play, but the Brewers scored three late unanswered goals to secure the victory. Ten different players tallied for the Thoroughbreds (2-6, 1-1 Liberty) against Bard, and Krista Lamoreaux ’17, Tess Mattimore ’16, Allison Byrne ’17 and Peggy Healy ’15 all potted two goals in the team’s first conference win of the season.  The Thoroughbreds host Union College at 4 p.m. Friday, April 4.

Men’s golf placed 23rd in the 43rd Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate at Camp Lejeune. Teddy Badenhausen ’17 was the team’s top finisher with 78-74 – 152, two strokes in front of Mackenzie Nelson ’17 (78-76 – 154). Mackenzie Denver ’16 shot 75-80—155 and Mitchell Campbell ’17 finished with 77-80—157. The team competes in the Manhattanville/NYU Invitational April 12-13.                          

Men’s lacrosse was edged at Vassar College, falling 10-5 it its second Liberty League contest. Quinn Hawkins ’14 netted a goal for the seventh straight game and added an assist for the Thoroughbreds (1-7, 0-2 Liberty). Kevin Mulvey ’16 tallied two goals and Jack Metzler ’17 and Josh Trachtenberg ’15 each added a goal. The team hosts crosstown rival RPI at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 2. ~ By Dan St.-Jacques
