Two programs to mark anniversary of 9/11

September 8, 2014

There will be two opportunities to observe the anniversary of 9/11 this year. Richard Noel Chrisman, director of religious and spiritual life, has announced details of a dialogue and a commemorative service scheduled this week. Details follow.

“9/11 A Dialogue—how should we remember it?”— 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, Jonsson Tower Penthouse

The program will feature a video of the new Ground Zero Memorial in New York City and an open dialogue to share our thoughts about where we are today, led by Chrisman, Lorri Riggs, Catholic Student Life Coordinator, and others. Said Chrisman, “The program will be a one-hour period of reflection for students, faculty and staff to consider the day and its meaning for us.  Some questions we could meditate on with our panelists are:  what is the message about 9/11 at the newly opened national memorial at Ground Zero?  Is it still true, as people said then, that this event changed everything? What do we know now that changes the meaning of 9/11?  What do today's college students know and feel about that day?  How are the families of the deceased doing?  How are our Muslim-Americans doing now?  How does ISIS change our view of 9/11?" To find the penthouse, take the elevator to top floor, and then take steps up one more floor to Penthouse.

9/11 Anniversary Memorial Observance—noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, Wilson Chapel.  Music, candlelight, and silent meditation. Come and go at any time for as long as you want.
