Style has spirit

May 28, 2015

T-shirts and sweats emblazoned with college names are a traditional gift for high school grads, but a custom pair of sneakers? This untraditional gift is causing quite a stir for members of the Class of 2019.

Earlier this month, Blair Goldstein from Omaha, Neb., posted a photo of her custom Skidmore Vans in the Class of 2019 Facebook group. “Ready for campus!” it read. The post garnered more than 90 likes from her future classmates and comments asking where she acquired the spirited kicks. The fashionable footwear was a graduation gift from her aunt.

A few days later, Emily Claire Cross in Andover, Mass., responded by posting a photo of her own custom Skidmore Vans, a graduation gift from her mother. The two women did not collaborate on purchasing the shoes. “It was a complete coincidence! I’m the only one at my school who has a pair,” says Cross.

Both women will join more than 600 classmates this fall when they arrive as first-year students on campus. Cross, who plans to wear her custom footwear on move-in day, is hoping to major in biochemistry with a pre-med track and minor in theater while at Skidmore. Goldstein, who applied Early Decision, isn’t sure yet about her major, but is interested in social sciences and studio art, “both of which I know I will be able to excel in at Skidmore. I can't wait to start the school year!” she says.
