Artists Galt, Degroot to present today's "Fred and Ted" talk

June 24, 2015

Sculptor John Galt and painter Katie DeGroot are the featured speakers in today’s “Fred and Ted" Talk, an artists’ talk scheduled at 12:30 p.m. in Saisselin Art Building, Room 113. Admission is free and open to all. (Please note room change, a previous version of this story listed location as Room 308.)

The Fred and Ted talks are informal conversations featuring speakers from the College’s Summer Studio Art Program, who discuss a range of subjects, including their latest work and inspiration, or art trends.

Galt, visiting assistant professor at Skidmore, received a B.A. degree in sculpture at SUNY Cortland and an M.F.A. in sculpture at the University of Pennsylvania. He has taught undergraduate courses at the University of Pennsylvania and is currently at Skidmore, where he teaches including elementary and advanced sculpture courses and is prominently involved in the bronze casting process each semester.

Galt owns Ibis Casting, specializing in “Lost Wax” ceramic-shell fine art casting, and he has designed and executed various types of sand molds at both Atlas Brass and Aluminum Company, Inc. and Laran Bronze, Inc. His work in sculpture has been featured in exhibitions both regionally and nationally.

Award-winning artist Katie DeGroot attended New York University and Illinois State University before living and working in New York City for nearly 20 years. She now resides on her great-grandparents’ farm next to the Hudson River in Fort Edward, NY.

In a recent interview (Numéro Cinq, January 2014) DeGroot noted, “I have worked from nature for many years. Recently found objects such as sticks and logs have become a starting point for my studio investigation. Where these objects lead me in my artwork has to do with my interests in surrealism and abstraction, as well as my own quirky interpretation of the objects’ personality.”

DeGroot is director of Skidmore’s Summer Studio Art Program. Click here for more information on DeGroot.
