Scope’s “Who What When”

From last time: Rooftop gang? Dozens of alumni recognize this group as the studio-art and art-history faculty in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Lynn Faught '73, Carol Christensen '70, and others guess it was earlier, but Penny Jolly recalls posing for the shot around 1979. The back of the photo says it was "mid-1980s" but adds a question-mark. Most agree with the back of the photo that the location is the roof of Saisselin Art Building on the then-new campus.

Matt Larkin '82 recognizes several of the professors, among them his art-history advisor Jim Kettlewell, Jeffrey Elgin ("the Drac-looking guy, who taught me a lot about modern art"), Joan Siegfried (whose significant other was "exotic and wore beautiful capes"), and Peter Paquette ("who started the Metro bar," above which "my girlfriend and I had a gallery called Trend-o mat"). He adds, "That was such a crazy fun time. I had a penthouse in the Algonquin that cost $250 a month. Thanks for the memory."

Celeste Puppolo '76 says, "I couldn't feel more nostalgic finding 12 out of the 17 art department cult figures, whom I still think of, believe it or not, every day for one reason or another. They gave so much to me!" Among those she can name are Regis Brodie, John Cunningham, David Miller, and Richard Upton. Martha Cederstrom '78 says she's happy to see "favorite professors exactly as I remember them." She also remembers "those fabulous downtown studios in ramshackle Victorians" and the move to "brand-new sparkly studios" on the new campus.

Denise Birchell Kilmer '79 offers 10 or more names and especially remembers her photography courses with Richard Linke (who she recalls set up this group shot for a postcard) and her January-term trip to Rome and Pompeii with Penny Jolly.

Jean Strathearn-Daniello '76, Amy Rauchfuss Tucker '85, Fran Addison '75, Jennifer Kett Mildonian '90, Nancy Cohen Klotz '84, Elizabeth Cerritelli Spurlock '76, and Gillian Knight Rathbun '88 add such names as Harry Gaugh, Doretta Miller, Earl and Eunice Pardon, and Victor Liguori. Sara Hotchkiss '73 guesses Henry Betar and Judy Lodge are in the photo, while Kate Kubert Puls '79, Katie O'Looney '80, Leslie Vanden-Handel DiCarlo '79, and Dana Hawkes '79 offer the name of Susan Hauptman in their IDs.
