Skidmore, City of Saratoga Springs partner to make ice rink improvements

October 6, 2021

A new partnership between Skidmore College and the City of Saratoga Springs will allow the College to build a new hockey locker room at the Weibel Avenue Ice Rink while enabling the City to make a number of other planned improvements to its ice rink facilities.

“Skidmore is very pleased to enter into this partnership, which will benefit both the College and the City,” said Donna Ng, vice president for finance and administration and treasurer at Skidmore.

Under the agreement approved by the City Council on Oct. 5, Skidmore is granted a license for more than 3,000 feet of land adjacent to the Weibel Avenue rink, for a period of 10 years, to construct the new locker room facilities.

In exchange, the City will receive just over $600,000 in license fees and for other planned improvements to its ice rink facilities, which will include the installation of a new traffic light at the rink entrance, upgrades for both the Weibel and Vernon rink lobbies, and other projects determined by the City in consultation with Skidmore.

“This is a great opportunity for the City and Skidmore to work together and improve the City’s recreation facilities,” said Saratoga Springs Commissioner of Public Works Anthony “Skip” Scirocco. “We’ve been working toward this for a while, and knowing that the Skidmore College hockey teams will continue to use our City rink as their home ice solidifies how Skidmore and the City of Saratoga Springs are dedicated to working together for the good of both our community and their students.”
