HI 201W: Greek History (Writing-Intensive)

Students in this course will explore the social,
political, economic and artistic contributions of the Greeks to western
civilization. Using literary, historical and archaeological methodologies,
students will examine the history of the Greek world from the Bronze Age
palaces on Crete and Mycenae to the spread of Hellenic culture throughout
the Mediterranean world. Major themes and issues will include the elegance
of Greek civilization, Greek relations with foreign nations, social and
political institutions, the treatment of women and the role of slavery,
the development of Socratic and Platonic philosophy, and the spread of
Hellenism by Alexander the Great.
