col•lo•qui•um (co-lô´kwê-um) n.

1. An informal meeting for the exchange of views.

[Lat., conversation < colloqui, to talk together: com-, together + loqui, to speak.]

What is the Aeneid all about? What does it mean?

To answer these questions we shall have a colloquium on Monday, 6 December, in which we shall consider Vergil's epic from several different viewpoints—as mythical tale, historical narrative, cultural artifact, and so on.

Each student will select and research one topic from the list below. During the colloquium, questions will be asked that address the topics individually, yet call for group discussion. What will emerge is a clearer understanding of the Aeneid and its place in Roman literature.

Timetable. The dates associated with this assignment are as follows:

  • 22 November (Monday): Topic must be chosen.
  • 6 December (Monday): Colloquium.
  • 13 December (Monday): Brief write-up of your topic due.
