Texts. Due to the eclectic nature of this course, all readings will be provided. Suffice it to say that we will draw from a broad range of texts, authors, genres, and the secondary sources in which they are explored.

Requirements.

Quizzes (20%). Brief quizzes (approx. 10-15 minutes) will be administered roughly every two weeks. They will be based upon past readings. As in previous terms, I will allow students the opportunity to correct their mistakes on quizzes for half credit. (This policy does not apply to exams.)

Presentations (30%). Each student will have the opportunity to make two substantial (1 hour or more) presentations in class over the course of the term. Topics and dates will be announced in the days ahead. Each presentation is worth 15% of your grade.

Final paper (30%). A final paper, based on your research and presentations, is due at the end of our final exam period (Friday, 17 December, 12:00 p.m.). Details are forthcoming, but let two requirements stand at the outset:

  • The paper must be of substantial length (15 pp. min.).
  • The paper must be submitted as a (simple) website.

Participation (20%). Class participation involves more than just attendance. You must also keep up with the readings and assignments, and participate actively during our sessions. Furthermore, I expect that you will come to class on time and that you will maintain an environment that promotes the exchange of ideas. Click here to view my attendance and late work policies.

Be sure to consult the Timetable for the dates of the various assignments, quizzes, and presentations.
