In Unit Four we shall read several comedies by the Roman playwright Plautus (c. 254 - 184 BCE), whose modus operandi was to freely adapt the plays of New Comedians such as Menander. Our goal in this unit is to study the survival of Greek comedy on the Roman stage, as well as to understand how these plays address the society of Rome itself.
