20%   Class participation. Class participation is an essential aspect of this course and consists of attending class on time, participating in class drills and discussions, and keeping pace with the rest of the class. Classroom work is a requirement, not an option. Of course, if you do not attend class you can not participate in the in-class discussions. You may take 3 absences from the classroom during the semester without penalty -- no questions asked, no explanation necessary. After three absences, each absence will result in a lowering of the class participation component of 20% by one full grade.
   
20%   Assignments. For every class you will have to prepare an assignment - translations of phrases, sentences or passages from the textbook; brief essays on relevant cultural topics, etc.; sentences composed in Latin and entered into the Forum, an electronic bulletin board. In order to receive full credit, you must complete all of the assignments properly and hand them in (or enter them in the Forum) on time. You must type assignments to be handed in (handwritten assignments will not be accepted), including both the original homework phrase or sentence, and then your translation on separate lines. Leave space after each problem so that you may pencil in corrections when we go over the sentences in class.

Quizzes

  • Vocabulary quiz: during each unit (or chapter).
  • Unit quiz: at the end of each unit except chs. 4 and 8. Unit quizzes include questions on the grammar and vocabulary and some review and sight translations.

I will drop the lowest grade among the vocabulary quizzes and the lowest among the unit quizzes.
   
10%   Midterm I: after unit 4. Comprehensive review of vocabulary, grammar, culture, and review & sight translations from units 1-4.
   
10%   Midterm II: after unit 8. Comprehensive review of vocabulary, grammar, culture, and review & sight translations from units 1-4.
   
20%   Final exam: during Finals Week, Monday, December 15, 1.30pm. Comprehensive review of vocabulary, grammar, culture, and review & sight translations from all units covered over the semester.
   
    Note: Absence from any quiz or exam without a written medical excuse will result in a grade of F for that assignment.
     
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY AND HONESTY
As you hone your skills as a reader of Latin you will develop your own perspectives, methodologies and solutions to some of the vexing questions that the study of language, literature and culture raises. It is absolutely essential that you take credit for your own work, and give credit to others when you draw upon their ideas and words.

Accordingly, plagiarism and cheating of all sorts will not be tolerated in this course and are grounds for an "F". Be sure to read carefully the Ethics of Scholarship webpage and the section on "Academic Integrity" in the Academic Information Guide.
