OVERVIEW

Students in this course will learn to read connected Greek prose through selections from Xenophon's Anabasis. The Anabasis is the tale of Cyrus's attempted overthrow of his brother, Artaxerxes, the Persian King. Cyrus enlists the aid of Greek mercenaries to accomplish his goal and the Greek General Xenophon provides us with an eye-witness account of the army's march to Babylon. Filled with strange beasts, illicit romance, and military prowess, the Anabasis is a a great read as well as being a good text for review of Greek grammar, syntax, and vocabulary .

Goals:

  • to enhance knowledge of Greek grammar, syntax, and vocabulary
  • to learn to read connected Greek prose
  • to understand the historical and cultural contexts of the Greek language
