Welcome to Unit One.

In this unit students will learn about the historical background to the study of Greek and Latin in English.

The study of language is the study of culture, and with culture comes geography, history and politics.

After a brief historical sketch of English, as well as of Greek and Latin, students will read about how Latin and Greek work. The remainder of this unit is devoted to the Greek alphabet (including specialized letter combinations known as diphthongs).

After reading Unit 1, students should be able to recite and write the Greek alphabet, as well as to transliterate Greek words into English.
