S. Lucius Cornelius Sulla - Aide to Marius in North Africa in 107 BC. Later is elected consul in 88 BC after marching his 36,000 troops into Rome to oppose Marius' plea to the senate to lead troops against Mithradates [VI] in Greece. Sulla given the consulship and leaves for Athens. He is exiled in 85 by Cinna and does not return until 83 BC, where he fights his way into Rome, defeating both Cinna's and Marius' armies. In 82 he is granted the title "Dictator for the Making of Laws and Righting the State." He holds this position until [79] BC, when he retires. Betwen 82 and 79 he attempts to give power back to the senate by instilling age limits and reconfiguring the number of [praetors] and consuls, among others. He also set up public lists known as proscriptions. Those found on this had their lands seized and were killed and their families lived in shame. He died finally in [78] BC.
