200-LEVEL GREEK AND ROMAN CIVILIZATION COURSES
Students will demonstrate the following skills:

  • acquisition of basic research methodology including
          use of primary sources
          use of secondary sources
          use of web-based and library-based materials
  • analytical skills in the close reading of literary and other documentary texts
  • ability to conduct a comparison among one of the following and draw some original conclusions
         literary texts/genres/issues
         archaeological objects/sites
         historical events
  • ability to write a literary, historical, art historical or archaeological analysis supported by primary and secondary sources, resulting in some original thinking
  • writing skills that result in
         a clear thesis
         a developed argument
         a coherent conclusion
         an essay or research paper free from mechanical errors

300-LEVEL GREEK AND ROMAN CIVILIZATION COURSES
Building upon the skills acquired in 200-level courses, students will demonstrate the following skills:

  • ability to read and analyze primary evidence (in translation) in depth
  • ability to read and analyze scholarship critically
  • ability to conduct a work of original independent research, for which the student selects his/her own topic and draws upon the body of primary and secondary materials (the latter including both journal articles and books), analyzes this scholarship and produces both
         a major writing project as a result of this research
         oral reports as an outgrowth of this research
  • ability to assess and present scholarship of a more theoretical nature, and apply theoretical constructs to the primary source
