Cornelius Tacitus

 

What made the great authors so great?  How did they do it?

     In this course we shall examine the aesthetics of Latin prose by analyzing selected works of Caesar, Cicero, Tacitus and other authors.

     In addition we will, by rendering English sentences and passages into Latin, explore the essentials of style and syntax.


Objectives.
 

The specific goals for this course are as follows:

  • to explore the syntax of Latin sentences and passages;
  • to examine the style of various Latin prose authors; and
  • to engage advanced Latin grammar and vocabulary.

Furthermore, students will draw upon universal skills of critical reading and thinking, and will communicate these skills both in class and in written exercises.
