Panel Discussions on Social History: November 29th, December 1st, December 3rd

Just before the Thanksgiving break, we will begin a four-day series on Roman social issues. On Monday, November 22nd, we will read and discuss Petronius’ novel The Satyricon, specifically the dinner at the house of the freedman Trimalchio (pp. 22-73).

After the break, we will embark upon three days of panel discussions on aspects of Roman society. These discussions will draw upon your final projects. Each of you will select one primary text as an illustrative example of some aspect of the lives of the Romans. In preparation for that discussion, you will want to avoid selecting the same text; therefore, establish email contact with the other students on your panel to decide which passage you will each select.
