Riot
in the Amphitheater, 59 CE: House of Actius Anicetus
(Naples Arch. Mus.)
|
| |
| The
artist depicted the riot both inside and outside the amphitheater,
with some engaging in battle and others in flight. City wall towers
stand on the horizon and support the vela or awning; another
architectural feature - the palaestra located in front of
the amphitheater with the natatio in the middle and a dedicatory
inscription on the facade - has been situated on the right for emphasis. |
