CL311 Schedule for Units 3-5
"Going to the Country," "Daily Rounds" and "Houses and Apartments"
February 12, 17-19, 24, 2004

Feb. 12:

Today our tapestry is the concept of the villa, and the various strands include the homes of Horace's friends Capito and Murena (Satires 5.39: Murena praebente domum, Capitone culinam), the excavations of Pompeii and Pliny's musings about how he spends his day.

Unit 3, "Going to the Country": We will begin with a discussion of the history of the exploration of Pompeii. You will share some of your thoughts about what Pompeii had experienced by 1869, and I will have a few comments to make about the archaeological history of the site, and the role of the villa in the site's post-Vesuvian history.

Unit 4, "Daily Rounds": Then we will work on Pliny's letter to Fuscus (9.36); Katy will introduce us to Pliny, and Allison, Andrea and Stacy will guide us through the reading. We should get through the letter during today's class. As we read it, we will ask Pliny to elucidate for us what life in a villa was like for one of Rome's literati. Pliny's letter addresses in brief the relationship between a patronus and his clientes, the same topic of the next two passages: an excerpted passage from a Senecan letter, and two parts of Juvenal's fifth satire. We will not read those together, but instead these are samples of the kinds of texts you would explore if you choose to develop a final project on daily life in an urban environment. More on this in class today.

Feb. 17-19, 24

Unit 5: "Houses and Apartments": this unit explores the construction of the villa, and life in private places in Pompeii. We will tackle this unit in the following order:

Feb. 24: begin Unit 6, "Inns, Lodging and Shops"
